Born in Portsmouth in 1812, the second of eight children, Dickens spent his early years in London and Kent. He would later describe himself as a “very small and not-over-particularly-taken- care-of boy”.

The original Comedy Store where I was the MC [from 1979] didn't close until the last punter staggered off into the Soho night at 4am.
